Hello everyone. :)

For some reason, when I entered the tenor part in a new layer in Finale, the stems pointed downward instead of upward. I believe that I entered the parts in this order; bass, soprano, alto, tenor (by this, I mean that I wrote out the bass part first, soprano second, alto third, tenor fourth; soprano is at the top of the score in treble clef, alto is below soprano in treble clef, bass is at bottom of score in bass clef and tenor is above bass in bass clef). Why did the tenor turn out this way and what can I do to fix this issue?

(I'm using Finale 2007 on a computer running Windows 10 Home)

I look forward to your responses.

… soprano is at the top of the score in treble clef, alto is below soprano in treble clef, bass is at bottom of score in bass clef and tenor is above bass in bass clef …

Does the SATB score use four staves (= S - A - T - B) or two staves (= S/A - T/B)?

If the score uses two staves only, then put Soprano and Tenor in Layer 1 (= stems up), and put Alto and Bass in Layer 2 (= stems down).

Select the Tenor/Bass staff and swap the layers.

Are you using layers 3 and 4 for tenor and bass?

Yes, Mike, I had forgotten some folks make that "error," in which case Naomi should check the lower two boxes instead of the upper two to swap layers 3 & 4 (as I realize you know).

Thank you all for your comments.

Peter Thomsen: If I am understanding and thinking correctly, my piece uses two staves. I'm inserting a picture of part of the score here so you can see it.

J Adrian Verkouteren: I hope that the feature you mentioned exists in Finale 2007 and will look into this. Thank you for letting me know about this.

Mike Rosen and J Adrian Verkouteren: No, I had only been using layers 1 and 2.

Thanks again for your comments, everyone.

Yes. You entered the bass and tenor lines in 1 and 2, rather than 2 (bass) and 1 (tenor.) Use the Move Layers function, as Adrian described, to swap the layers. You can do them both at the same time.

Now that I can see the score, I have to question why you are working on a backup (.BAK) file, and why you are in Studio view, rather than in Scroll or Page?

Thank you, Mike. I will see if I can do what you and Adrian have described.

Honestly, I'm an absolute beginner in Finale. I had an unusual issue happen with authorizing it (I am authorizing it in my uncle's name and with his info (it is actually his software which he has gifted to me), and I have his permission to do so), so I think that may be when I used a .BAK file, but I'm not even sure of that. I hadn't really thought through why I was in studio view; that's just the view I use while working on the song and I'm still in the editing process. That being said, my song isn't copyrighted yet, so I really didn't want to share the whole score here in case someone dishonest would take it and run off with it. I think I have tried the Scroll and Page views before.

Naomi,

I can't recall a single instance where someone on the forum stole a song, but I can understand your concern.

If you are in the States, and need a few "getting started" tips, or have any questions, feel free to call me. I'm in Seattle, at 206 five two three 9628.

Mike,

That is good to know.

Thank you for offering to give me "getting started" tips as well as to answer any questions I may have. My uncle (he is retired and lives alone so he has time) just yesterday offered to edit the score for me and so I am thinking about this and will let him know what I decide by tomorrow morning. I deal with a lot of chronic pain issues (including in my wrists which are currently recovering from a mild flare up) so I have to do a lot of prioritizing and strategizing in order to live my life, which is why he has offered to do this for me. That being said, I do want to learn how to use Finale myself and I may call you sometime next week. Thanks again for offering.
