Win 10, Finale 26, GPO5

Speedy Entry 25 and 26.  An entered note sounds, but continues to sound even when entering more tones  I have to click somewhere outside the entry box to silence the tone.  Sometimes multiple clicks are required.  This occurs often--sometimes for more than 50-60% of the tones entered.

Are you adding pitches (in Speedy Entry) using the QWERTY keyboard or a MIDI keyboard?

Does the problem affect specific notes or random pitches? Does it occur when you are attempting specific durations or random durations?

(You could try sending a sample file to MakeMusic Support via the "Submit a request" link at the top of the page.)

for Alfredo, via Google Translate:

¿Está agregando tonos (en Speedy Entry) usando el teclado [normal] o un teclado MIDI?
¿El problema afecta notas específicas o tonos aleatorios? ¿Ocurre cuando intentas duraciones específicas o duraciones aleatorias?

(Puede intentar enviar un archivo de muestra al Soporte de MakeMusic a través del enlace "Enviar una solicitud" en la parte superior de la página).

Thank you for your response!

The “held tone” problem has been going on for so long (started in V25), and I’ve had so much contact with Finale support that I’ll just list info that I hope will ultimately lead to a solution.
1. Using Win 10, Finale 26, GPO5 (all have he latest software versions)
2. Speedy Entry QWERTY for data entry
3. Per instructions from Finale support I have:
--uninstalled/deleted/reinstalled Finale 25 and more recently, Finale 26
--checked all drivers, especially audio
--checked MIDI/Audio settings; tried audio setting changes. The support tech thought it unusual that Finale works only with my ASIO sound driver. Direct Sound does not work.
--sent Finale scores manifesting the problems
--sent audio extractions (wave and mp3) showing that the error does not show up in them
4. On my own, I:
--made test docs and sent them to support
--downloaded Finale 26 (again...), re-installed clean copy. (Yes, I followed hidden file deletion and other protocols).
--Downloaded GPO5 (again) and re-installed same
5. Here is what I’ve found so far:
–the “held tone” problem manifests itself in every document using GPO5, Finale default sounds, and Aria Player. It does so frequently using any instrument, and notating any rhythm, pitch, dynamic etc. To silence the tone, I must put the Speedy Entry box in another measure and click. Fairly often I must do this process several times.
–playback and scrubbing work correctly
–a document I created using only SmartMusic SoftSynth sounds never produced the held tone errors
6. That SoftSynth always works and was selected by me in the Aria Player suggests that the Aria Player is functioning with Finale. Furthermore, the absence of error flags in either the installation processes or programs suggests that the installations are good, i.e., not corrupted. Rather, I think the data suggest that there is some glitch between Garritan and Finale 25 and 26.
7. This problem has caused me much interruption in composing and many, many hours of troubleshooting.

Thanks again,
Dennis

I too have been struggling with this problem for some time. I can confirm the points mentioned by Dennis on the whole, but I would like to add some more.
1. WIN 10, FIN 26.3, GPO5 & GPO4
2. speedy entry MIDI keyboard for data entry
3. direct sound, ASIO usually cannot be loaded
Since I am working with a german version, I cannot use the US Finale support, but have to go through the german distributor (company Klemm).
Additional: The error occurs only after some time, about 30 - 60 minutes. It seems to affect mainly larger files (longer pieces for orchestra). Besides the "held tones" the program jumps back and forth between the tracks. So: Input in the violin, I hear a clarinet. Input in the clarinet, I hear a trumpet. But everything completely random.
7. I feel exactly the same!! i have been working with finale since about 1995 and not as a hobby. I have a company with which I want to earn some money and not the time to bother with extensive software tests. That is the task of the software provider. I have paid for the software, year after year, and expect a faultless application. My customers expect the same from me! I hope that there will be a solution to the problem soon.

Thanks, Lothar

Even though I have not experienced this problem in my work, I do not doubt you have; and it would be a serious problem. Like you and most of those who post here, I am a user rather than a MakeMusic employee, and I agree that the software should work flawlessly or be brought into line when it does not.

At the same time, as a user of Finale since the beginning, I can say my expectations that the specific problem you relate here will be solved soon are not great, although I hope I am wrong.

Some things I noticed, which may be of no consequence:

  1. I seldom enter notes on the QWERTY keyboard; if I do not use a MIDI keyboard, I use the mouse (for short fixes).
  2. I use DirectSound, having had no luck with ASIO.
  3. I use several of the common Garritan packages (although I have started using NotePerformer more, even with Finale).
  4. I find the Finale Support folks usually respond quickly when I submit a request and are helpful, and we usually find a solution to whatever problem I am experiencing.

For whatever that is worth....
