I have written a jazz band chart that uses a funk beat about MM = 85. I would like a better, more up to date beat for the drum part. Any ideas? Thanks.

Ask a drummer. I'm not being flip, that's just the best thing that you can do.
I asked Kenton's drummer years ago for tips on writing drum charts. He advised against notating it perfectly. He said an inexperienced drummer couldn't play a part that's perfectly notated and an experienced drummer would be able to come up with something much better that what was written. Just give him a verbal instruction of the style and include whatever rhythmic hits that would be important.
I am looking for a good track to use on the playback with a tune I wrote in 1978. I have tweaked it and need a better funk beat around MM=85. I would think to not notate it for the drummer but just slashes and say to play a funk beat. I could put the drum track in layer two and have it play with it hidden. If anyone has a good pattern, I'd love to hear from them. Thanks.
