Windows 10, current Finale 26.x

Hi all,

Is there a way to get piano music (the instrument piano) to playback recognizing slurs and/or legato expressions?

With winds and strings the following passage plays back as it looks, but with piano sounds there is no distinction:

With the piano, in each measure each note is articulated.

Thank you,
:-)

What Human Playback (HP) settings have you tried?

What piano sound are you using?

Hi Adrian,

Thank you for your response.

I tried all of the GPO5 pianos, and my HP is "Classical" with default prefs.

If you have access to the "Concert D Grand Piano" in Personal Orchestra 5, the Controls Tab of the Aria Player gives you a control called Rel. Decay which seems to allow notes to sound more joined, given that the sample-attack is probably not alterable.

There is no MIDI CC for this parameter, so you would likely have to assign a separate instance of the sound to a separate layer to make it work, if you have access to GPO 5 at all.

I hope that helps. When I look at HP Preferences, I do not see anything related to Piano at all. I was looking to see if one could add a technique to slightly lengthen each note to overlap with the next. Perhaps someone more versed in custom HP will chime in with a solution if one exists.

EDIT: I have to say an A/B playback of a passage with the Rel. Decay on for a slurred passage is not much of a change if anything, certainly not worth purchasing GPO 5 if you do not have it.

FWIW, standard midi parameter CC #64 is the sustain pedal. Values from 0-63 are pedal down, 64-127 are pedal up.

If you want good playback you should really consider using a DAW, such as Cubase. Even its simplest version (Elements, and that's all you need) is not too expensive and will enable you to control, among many other things, note lengths, levels, reverb, EQ, etc, all automated for final mixed playback mp3 or WAV files. You can also use your GPO5 sounds. If you're not sure, you can download a free 30-day trial version of Cubase, and try out all the features that Cubase has to offer — with no restrictions. You will need to invest a little time to learn all of its features, but in the end it will be worth it. I never use Finale for playback other than checking notes - I get the content and notation perfect for printing, and then export a MIDI file into Cubase to create the best possible audio mixes.

Hi everybody,

Thank you for your suggestions.
I just have to accept that this is something that Finale does not do.

I have been experimenting with NotePerformer 3.3 and it has some wonderful features, including the option to create a legato Expression with Controller #19. I created an On and an Off, and it works splendidly.

Oh, well. Finale does do a lot of things right.
