Hi everyone,

Elementary music educator here,

I know I suggested this about 3 years ago, but how about some high-quality (or even "so-so" quality) fingering diagrams, especially for woodwinds and brass instruments?  They could be established to appear over the notes, similar to fretted instrument diagrams appear with chords.

When I suggested this in the past, I was told that I could make some "diagrams" by using the fretboard editor.  I tried it; not good.

And anyway, this is Finale!!  Are we really satisfied with using a wrench (rather than a hammer) to pound our nails?  Is it not preferable to use a tool designed for the task, so it looks great, and professional?  This addition alone would be enough for me to jump on a future or current version that included it as an update.

I know that, by clicking on a note in SmartMusic, I can get a great-looking fingering diagram.  In the educational resources with Finale, there are some great-looking fingering blanks for kids to fill in the dots.  By MakeMusic's own features and worksheets, you demonstrate that fingering diagrams are a valuable resource.  Can we (educators) have an incorporated tool or plug-in like "show fretboards" but instead (specific to the instrument indicated in the Score manager) "show fingering diagrams" in a drop-down menu?  What a cool idea!!

And please, please, don't ask me to go and try and draw my own diagrams with the editor.  I can't figure that thing out, and I just don't have the time to take that on.  Thanks for considering a robust addition for instrumental educators!

I recently helped a forum user by setting up Native American Flute diagrams as expressions with metatools. I suspect something similar could be done, as long as there is a font with the required glyphs.

Jeffrey Turner Thanks for the links.  There is some movement in the right direction here.

I can't shake the thought that some of these fonts/graphics exist because they were not available in Finale in the first place.

My longstanding desire (and repeated request)  is for Finale to include INTEGRATED fingering diagram options, akin to the "show/hide fretboards" option.

I used to have much more time to go about designing my own workarounds (none as good as those that are seen in some of these links!).  Now, not so much.

I'll keep asking, and dreaming, because I think it's a GREAT idea!

Option 1: Wait for Finale to add this as a feature. And wait. And wait...

Option 2:  Go with Jeffrey’s suggestion to find and download the font, and start using it.

Hmmm...
May have to be both.
