I have Finale v26 for Mac (I'm using MacOS 10.14.6). When I write divisi parts (chords) for a Bb clarinet part created using setup wizard, it plays back as chords. When I write them for bass clarinet created using setup wizard, only the top note plays back. Is there a fix for this?

It's a machine, not a live player. It doesn't know what a divisi part is. It just sees multiple noteheads on a beat and plays it back as a chord. If you want 2 or 3 parts that playback correctly in unison or divisi, then write 3 separate clarinet parts on different staves and different midi channels.

Any Garritan sample that's called for example "Bass Clarinet Solo" means that it's a solo instrument and only one note will sound at a time. If you want divisi playback on a bass clarinet you have to write a separate part using a different midi channel.

Wait, it's not a live player? You're blowing my mind right now.

It doesn't need to know what divisi is; playback as a chord IS what divisi sounds like, that's what I wanted. I didn't realize that the "solo" designation negated that (except for instruments that can play double-stops, I'm assuming?). Thanks for clarifying.

"... it back as a chord."

If you have different notes on a beat it will sound like a 'chord' no matter how many staffs you write. If you are writing more than one note on a beat, don't you want it to sound like a chord? Am I missing something here?

ERNEST BIGGS That is what I wanted. Apparently if the instrument is labeled as a "Solo" instrument, it won't play chords on a beat even if you have many different notes on a beat (except violin, because they can play multiple notes at once). Unfortunately in my case there is no "section bass clarinet" instrument.

You know I never noticed that. I wonder how it decides which note to play?  I appears it chooses the highest note.

Going through the instrument list it also appears as the only instruments that are solo only are the ones that a band typically has only one player. Perhaps that's their reasoning. Thanx for pointing that out to me.

However, writing a part for each instrument in this predicament is the only way for correct sounding playback. But I must admit, I don't ever recall seeing a Bass Clarinet 1 and Bass Clarinet 2 in a score. I am sure it has happened though. Probably a movie score!
