In the Problems side, a user has pointed out that Finale Broadway does not include the small m for minor chords—it can be added of course.

I pointed out that m for minor is not used in Broadway scores and parts since it can be easily mistaken for M Major in parts done by hand. The minus sign - is normally used to indicate minor chords instead.

Then it was pointed out that the minus sign - is not available by default for minor (again, it can be added).

Whaaaaaaaaatttttt???????  Leaving out the default sign for minor in a handwritten font emulation?

This is a mistake and should be corrected.

Mike, I believe there is a minus/minor symbol in Finale Broadway. It can be located using the Search function in SMuFL-based Symbol Selection dialog window. Does the one below look correct to you?

This problem still exists. Finale 27.2, Mac OSX 12.6 Monterey.

If you try to create a chord symbol with a minus sign using the "Finale Broadway" font, Finale creates a chord symbol with an unknown symbol where the minus sign should be. Not fair to expect the user to hunt down the minus sign from somewhere else, insert it, and fix the resulting poor spacing.

Jerilyn Sykes,

Unfortunately I am unable to reproduce your problem (using Finale 27.3, Mac OSX 12.7 Monterey).

As you can see from my screen shot of the Chord Suffix Editor, I created a chord suffix with a minus sign using the "Finale Broadway" font:

For me, the chord symbol displays correctly in the score:

Hi Peter,

It looks like you created it in the suffix editor, and that does seem to work - although I'd point out that you have the same "?" marking in your editing window.

The point remains, we shouldn't have to work this hard. -7 is a standard, commonly used chord suffix and it should already exist in the library.

Thanks,
JS

As someone who played guitar/banjo/bass books in pit orchestras and jazz bands for decades, I wholeheartedly agree. The minus sign and minus7 etc. for minor chords should be a default that can be selected in Preferences. The handwritten books still in use for many Broadway shows used it.
