I got to have a long session with Sibelius last Saturday.   For music notation the two are similar in their own ways but pretty even. Sibelius print ability is worse than the poor one in Finale which never worked. However, Sibelius has the ability to export videos of the music with the cursor following the music. Finale is so into sharing, the big deal of 27, I can't imagine they haven't done that also. But they haven't!

Also the 'hand' tool works way better than Finale. the screen doesn't go blank for instance. Very smooth.

Are you listening Make Music?

If you were alive in the 1970's, the "Big 3" car makers took the fledgling Japanese car companies as a passing fancy. Nothing to worry about. The Big 3 had 90% market share at that time. You see how that has played out Make Music.  Keep ahead or ......... well you know what the outcome will be.

In terms of doing videos with the cursor following the music, that's nice. What I've done with several of my scores is to simply record the screen with QuickTime and hit Play. The key thing is to have the audio saved, which as I recall I did by routing to Black Hole. But yes, it would be much nicer to have that built into Finale for sure.

Export to mp3 would also be nice. Sibelius has that also.

It used to. I’m old enough to remember when fínale could export to mp3. It was slower of course than to aiff but it was nice. There were technical reasons, if I remember correctly, why they pulled it from all subsequent versions.

Finale had export to mp3 when it had only the MIDI soundset, and once Garritan came on board, Finale continued to export MIDI sounds to mp3, only VST's requiring .wav audio export.

Apparently Exporting a MIDI audio file in v27 throws an Error -2, no idea why.

Actually , now that mp3 no longer needs to be licensed, Finale could add a routine that would export either MIDI or VST sounds in mp3 as well as .wav.

But they don't and that is the point. They could add these features but they just don't seem receptive and are stuck in some neverland. Both the major competing software choices have these options but we get file sharing which everyone one I have talked to say they will never use.

You know you are right. I had forgotten that. Sibelius has sounds similar to Garritan and it still exports to mp3. Which brings up another silly thing, to me anyway, why is it "Export"?  Why not put all of it in Save As? Save as an XLM. Save as a mp3. Save as a wav.

It always come back to this point. One or the other, they don't have the money to or they don't know how!

That would probably be a bigger disaster than I think they are in now.

BTW, since I am fairly new to this forum what is a "Community Expert"?  Are you a MM employee?

No, we aren’t. We’re simply users who have been around pretty much since the forum started, and give more right answers than wrong ones. We have no moderator powers, or anything like that.

As forum user (and Community Expert) J Adrian Verkouteren pointed out two weeks ago,

“Experienced User”

might be a more accurate moniker than “Community Expert”.

Actually I do not have to do anything.

I can visit - or not visit - this forum as much as I prefer.

I can reply - or not reply - to posts as much as I prefer.

Also, I am not getting paid.

No, you have to give helpful advice.
