Hi everyone,

I'm trying to figure out a way to play microtones in one layer while the other plays unaltered. I've set up microtones by altering the Pitchwheel with the Expression tool.

I've had some luck in the score manger setting up a different layer to a different channel and assigning expressions to that same channel. The problem is that all expression playback (dynamics, pizz, etc.) in layer 1 is ignored.

I was wondering if Data Dump could work, but I don't know enough about what I'm doing?

I've seen a way to import a Scala file and set a up a non-standard key sig, but I haven't had much luck figuring out how to get the scala file.

Any advice would be super appreciated or different methods would be great!

Thanks!

I am no export, but I suspect that you should create a new instrument, and assign that new instrument to the “microtone layer”.

Sp that the “microtone layer” plays “another instrument”.

Have you tried that?

I've seen other suggestions for this, but have been confused.  Do you mean:

1. Creating a new instrument as a separate staff?

2. Assigning a new instrument in the dropdown layers in the Score manager to the "microtone" layer?

Thanks for responding!

Scala files are handled by the Garritan Aria player. You may find some help on the Garritan Forum how best to install and use custom Scala files.

I meant option 2.

In order for the expression to only affect one Layer, the other Layers need a different instrument assigned.

Are you using

MIDI/Audio menu > Play Finale Through Audio Units

or

MIDI/Audio menu > Play Finale Through MIDI

?

I've tried opt. 2 the way I know how to do it, but that's where the frustration is coming in where they don't act independently.

MIDI/Audio menu > Play Finale Through Audio Units (GIFF)

Thanks!

Have you tried with {Play Finale Through MIDI}?

I will try that, though I don't think GIFF runs through that!

Indeed.

If you must use GIFF, then {Play Finale Through MIDI} is not an option.

I'm using an old pc, Win 10, Fin 26.

I found that creating another bank  in the Score Manager seems to be required to use different tunings, since all the channels in one bank will share a common tuning.

I created a scala file, and saved it in the other scala files folder wherever the Google search said it was located.  Program files, Aria Player, Scales, or something like that.  It worked surprisingly well.  I just followed the advice and directions here:

https://www.huygens-fokker.org/scala/scl_format.html

My pc kept trying to save what I wrote as ".scl.txt" but that won't work.  After a few tries, I got it to save as just a ".scl" file.

I'll stress that it SEEMED to work.  Then it didn't.  But I think that's an ish with my pc.
