I have just upgraded to v27 and am printing old scores and parts. The parts are printing with the top margin smaller than what's shown on the screen. This happens on multiple printers and when making PDFs. I've seen on here there are problems with left/right margins but not yet with top/bottom.
I have been having this problem since installing 27 in August 2021. I wrote to tech support and I got this response.
***I first wanted to let you know that there is currently a known issue in Finale v27 where margins will be shifted down and to the right when printing directly to a physical printer. I've gone ahead and flagged this case up to our development team to raise the priority of the issue. While I am unfortunately not able to provide a timeline for resolution, there is a workaround I wanted to share with you.
If you export your document as a PDF file, open the PDF file in a reader application, and print from the reader, the margin issue will not be present in the printed document. I realize that using this workaround is certainly not an ideal solution, though I do hope it provides your a path forward while the issue is being addressed.****
I was sure it would have been solved in last week's 27.1xxxx update but no, the problem is still there. I do not understand why Makemusic is not working 24/7 on fixing this. It's the programs ultimate goal to print music correctly.
If this is not fixed quickly, 27 will be the last version of Finale I ever buy. Why give money to a company that does not care to fix a MAJOR problem, communicate the problem to it's customers nor give a timeline. This is the straw that broke the camel's back. I hope all Finale user share their feelings with MakeMusic.
So yes, I am also experience that problem João and I am digusted.
Unfortunately, each year that passes I fear more and more for the future of Finale - so bad decisions in my humble opinion - not doing a version for the iPad, slow fix of bugs and problems, modernisation of features (chord creation, midi editing, a kind of magnetic layout, etc...). I really hope they start to catch up and improve things, but bugs like this let me down. I had to come to use version 26 again. I am using Dorico too, and the way they are evolving is incredible. MuseScore is also improving. The competition is getting harder, so I expect Finale to open their eyes and take this things seriously. Please development team of Finale, please stop stalling and get serious in making Finale better - the program has so much potential but needs to see what is happening around with the competition and change course or will be passed by almost every one.
I agree with you Joao, I do fear for the future of Finale.
Finale used to be the only game in town, for a full feature notation software, there were few other options. Now competition is fierce Makemusic can not act is if all is well. All is not well. They need to be responsive to it's customers or before long they will be known as the company that started software notation nothing more than a memory like Kodak is today.
When a customer like myself who started using Finale in version 2 is exploring Dorico and Sibelius as a replacement there is a problem. I would not be considering ditching Finale if they at least had a decent support and communicated known bugs with it's customers. As far as I am concerned by not informing it's customers of such an important problem they do not care about its users. Very sad especially considering the retail price of the software.I have had enough of Makemusic smug attitude towards its customers.
In Finale File menu there is an Export with many options one of them is PDF. This only export the current part so it need to be done for every part individually. That is a real pain.
I find it's better to use the regular print function but to use a "pdf printer" this way all parts can be exported at once. Yes you still need to save every generated pdf and yes that still is a pain.
I wish Finale would get it's act in gear and fix this once and for all.
Hope this helps Joao Luiz
But gladly, I've found where to export to PDF in another place:
(and here the PDF is created without the margin problem)
You have to be in page view and them click the graphics button in the palette.
After selecting the graphics in the tool palette a new menu Graphics appear.
Here you can export pages to PDF.
Thank you guys for the help.
P.S. I think this is a serious bug that should be resolved by now.
Without disagreeing that Finale should have a more transparent way to export PDF on the Mac, the situation may be an oversight, but it is not a bug. A bug is something that does not work as intended. The omission of an export PDF function on the Mac is not a programming mistake since the Mac has a PDF option (for better or for worse) in its normal print routine whereas Windows does not. That explains the difference between the two versions' Export menu options.
You are right J Adrian. But maybe my text was not clear - the bug I was referring to is the one about the incorrect top margins generated by creating PDFs using the Print menu - Save as PDF - the problem still exists if you create a PDF by there.
Have to create a PDF using the graphics in the tool palette is not practical. Until yesterday I even never knew about that function because I always used to create PDFs from the Print menu - Save as PDF.
This should have been fixed by now.
It's sad to see these kind of bugs / problems in Finale 27 take so much time to be fixed.
Peter, of course we can agree to disagree. Good to know that you find it practical, but why loose another way of creating a PDF. Let the people decide what is best for each one's use. For me, it was using the Print command - save as PDF.
But as I said before, what worries me most is the time that this is taking to be fixed.
Sadly not the case. I'm running the final version 27.4.2 on a Ventura 13 machine, and the problem of ignoring top margins persists when printing and when sending to Preview; however, if I open the files in my archived version of Finale 25, the margins print just fine.
João's suggestion of exporting from the Graphics menu does indeed work in 27.4.2, but is pretty cumbersome.
