If MM tech people are seeing this I just want to let them know some of us are still experiencing this. Finale shuts down for no apparent reason and displays this,  "Finale has encountered an error and will shut down". No other explanation. It recovers fine and restores previously open files.

The at first fairly frequent times it happened, I contacted MM support and was told it was probably do to an outdated sound driver. As my Realtek sound driver was ready for an update I did update it. The error and shut down has been moved from a disaster to a nuisance. If I leave Finale open long enough it will suffer this shut down.

I had not noticed that in earlier versions and have not altered my work scheme any. I have not added any new software except for whatever MS does with Windows 10 and some updated drivers.

Work around is to shut Finale down and reopen it a couple times times a day. Shut is down at night. Set autosave to pretty short intervals.

Ernest, this is a very generic error message that will be seen when Finale shuts down after encountering a variety of potential causes. Most commonly, this is seen when resources the program was using change or become inaccessible, but that isn't always the case and sometimes it can be tricky to diagnose. If you want to, feel free to submit a case and we can look into it more closely with you.

David it's no biggie. I just can't leave 27 running for extended periods of time. I did contact MM support and the tech was great. I was thoroughly satisfied with his answers. Updating the Realtek sound driver did almost eliminate the issue. I used to leave Finale open for days. Now I just shut it down occasionally.

It doesn't seem to be related to any specific thing I do which doesn't help in troubleshooting it. I have heard and am aware of several folks seeing this in 27. There is one on the Finale Forum right now.

This is a severe and dangerous problem.  I lost a file-- totally deleted-- last night when Finale did this.  It did NOT auto-save the file.  Luckily there was a back-up file that had been auto-saved half an hour prior to this incident, and so I only lost a small amount of work, and not the eight hours of work I initially thought I had lost.

George,

You need to set your autosave settings to 10 minutes. Also, a shut down and reopen every few hours is a good idea. Even if Finale missed an autosave the last time it shut down unexpectedly, you would of had the previous 10 minute autosave to rely on. Keep in mind autosave occurs as you are working in the background. Backup happens when you save it.

I can't believe this isn't something with 27 since I never saw it with 26 or earlier versions. Perhaps it did but it was rare enough I don't remember it being a problem.

I would take MM support's advice and make sure all your drivers, sound and video, etc., are up to date and the most current.

George, it's unfortunate to hear that you encountered data loss like that. That is certainly not good but I am glad that you were able to recover at least some of your work with the backup file.

If this happens while you are actively working on a file in Finale, that is much bigger problem for sure. If you would like to look into this more, please do submit a ticket with us and we can try to find you some answers for this.

If this happens while you are actively working on a file in Finale,

It always happens when you/we are actively working on a file in Finale. If you would you like for me to reopen a support request, I can do so. I don't know what I could possibly supply to you guys that I didn't on the first time. This is the same plain jane vanilla Dell desktop that run 26 and 2014.5 and earlier versions of Finale without issue.
