Hi. Posting this here but I also "submitted a request".

Windows 10. Finale v27.1.0.271

This problem has been ongoing for at least 3-4 years but I've never written in. Lately it happens often enough to be quite annoying. And unfortunately I cannot detect a pattern of commands that leads to the issue. To input notes I use speedy entry with a midi keyboard. Depending on the passage being copied, I sometimes turn on "CapsLock" and set the number to the necessary note value. In this mode, I'm chugging along merrily, then Finale crashes. That is, I get the spinning circle, the program freezes, it never comes back; I click around the screen and eventually it turns white with a faded display. I can close the Window, and ask for a re-start when prompted. Very fortunately, 95% of the time my file is recovered by Finale and no input is lost. Sometimes I have to remember to immediately save it with the correct name as the recovered file is "Untitled".
Anyway, any ideas as to what I might further investigate? I am fairly tech saavy. As I said this has been happening for quite a while and I've been paying the bucks and upgrading versions almost every time a new one comes out. THANK YOU!

Is it possible your are "chugging along merrily" with Caps Lock on so fast that you fill up the buffer by doing so?

I don't think I'm filling the buffer, but thanks for giving me something to watch for....
If I'm going slowly and it keeps happening, I'll let you know.😅

I also get frequent crashing with Speedy. In my case it is almost always when I first click into the frame. File recovery always works, but it is a major annoyance. I have tried to figure out a pattern, but found none. Using MIDI keyboard entry.

I DID IT!

I had a theory about the cause of this and it worked! I don't know if this will shed any light on on your issues Richard.

I'm entering notes using Speedy Entry, caps lock on for a series of similar notes values, or just using that method instead of hitting the number pad for each entry.

Beside me on the same (large) screen I am running Adobe, displaying a scan of the score that I'm copying. I stop entering data for a moment, and move my mouse to the Adobe window (to turn a page or check something).

Then, forgetting to move my mouse back to the Finale window (my error), I play a note on my keyboard. Obviously then I see that no notes are going in. DUH! I move my mouse back to the Finale Speedy Entry bar I'm in.

BAM - then next note I play it crashes.

So I imagine it is some kind of issue with Finale, the O/S, the MIDI driver -- who knows?

I don't really care now as I can avoid the issue by remembering to move back to Finale before playing more notes.

Thanks all.

Tom
