Hi list,

I was checking some files done in Fin27, and it seems that there are some problems migrating from mac to pc. The original file was done in mac, in PC there are problems with font rendering and font slots - using the same files and fonts. E.g. when the file is open in PC:

  • Enclosures are incorrect
  • Wrong character for flags
  • Wrong stem height for tremoli
  • Wrong character for some special noteheads (should be empty, but rectangles show instead)

This is the first time using F27. Any advices from someone more experienced?

Best,

jmmmp

yes

Did you create the original file on the Mac? If so, how did you copy it over?

The file was created by someone else and I just opened it. But I fail to see how that could be relevant - I open it on a mac and it looks as is supposed to, I open it on a pc and it looks different.

Without knowing how the work was prepared on the Mac, we are missing pieces to the puzzle. Best to use the Submit a request link at the top of the page and send both copies to MakeMusic Support.

When I open an expression/articulation/notehead and see that slot X was used for it, and that the same slot has another content in the PC font (both fonts being the official maestro smufl, or another font which has been used in productions for the last 10 years with no issues before F27). What else can be "prepared" differently, can you elaborate on that, is there any online documentation about new issues introduced on F27? Or keywords I can use to search the forum?
I've worked with versions 2010 to 26 and never had such issues happening.

Hi Joao,

I have looked at your files and came to this conclusion:

1.) Probably your DSE Music Symbols 1b has an encoding problem which leads to a MAC/PC incompatibility if used incorrectly. There are other fonts that have the same problem.

2.) AFAIK the DSE Music Symbols 01b must be added to MacSymbolFonts.txt first   (at least that's how Perfect Layout handles them - probably according to your suggestions).
When I load your document into Fin27.0/mac with DSE.. included in MacSymbolFonts, the document doesn't work correctly either. Same problems.
When I remove DSE... from MacSymbolFonts.txt, the document shows up fine in Finale 27.0/macOS.

So I assume your client used DSE ... incorrectly without adding it to MacSymbolFonts.txt first. As DSE ... is only compatible with PC when added to MacSymbolFonts.txt, it doesn't work like this anymore on PC.

Hi Jan,

that's a nice theory. I'll only be able to test it in a good week's time, when I have acces to a mac again. I think it's quite feasible according to how I tested the file. Assuming you nailed it, what would you advise on how to correct it, go through all slots and settings until everything is correct?

Yes, add the font to MacSymbolFonts.txt, then change the slots on macOS (so that it also works on macOS).

Before you change all slots on macOS, do a few tests to check if the file changed on macOS now works on Windows.
