Finale 2020 on Windows 10.

It is a great feature that an entire lyric can be pasted into the lyric window and entered into the piece all at once.  And the spacing of the lyric accounts for tied notes.  But what about the melisma?   The lyric tool ignores slurs when imputing an entire lyric.  By far, the majority of times I use a slur in a vocal line, I intend it to be interpreted as a melisma.  At present, I must revisit the entire piece and move lyrics to the right each time a melisma is encountered.    Perhaps we could add a "melisma tool" to distinguish it from the normal slur?

How do you envision that working?

 

You can set word extensions to only appear on words with underscores. I don't use that, so I don’t know how it works. If you enter multiple underscores, would that move the lyric that number of notes?

 

I’m happy to go back through the score, and shift the lyrics. I generally find at least one or two mistakes at the same time.

Point well taken.   I often make mistakes also, usually involving left out hyphens on multi-syllable words.  Missing hyphens become obvious quite quickly.  
If the majority of Finale users agree with me that slurs on vocal music are almost always melismas, then the lyric tool could be set to to shift lyrics right-ward by default whenever a slur (melisma) is encountered, just as it does for a tied note.  If users vote against that option, a new tool could be created called "the melisma tool" which would cause lyrics to be shifted right-ward.  I for one would be eternally grateful.
