Is there any thought to updating the volume in Finale so that playback will be louder?
I often use headphones when I am writing and I have to turn the volume all the way up on my Macbook Pro. If I get an email or text while working, the volume of the alert is so loud it hurts my ears. I have quit Mail and Messages in the past to deal with this, but I don't want to close everything else out when I'm writing.
I use the mixer, and turn the master all the way up, but it's still quiet.
When I make an mp3 of any of my work, I have to open the mp3 in Audacity and increase the volume so that it's comparable to other mp3s.
This is not a new issue. I've had this problem for every version I've had.

You know there are several places to set the volume? Have you checked them all?

Yes, I have used both of the things you suggest. I don't put the individual track sliders all the way up, but I do set the master volume at the highest level.

There used to be an old trick of applying Garritasn Ambience to everything and then boosting the volume (without boosting the amount of ambience) there, but when Garritan introduced Convolution Reverb, adding Ambience at the Master level of Banks and Effects was removed.

I don't know how much good it does to tell about a feature that is no longer available. I can only tell about my situation.

I have most of the places where the volume can be selected to about 3/4th up. I have a plain vanilla Dell (5+years old), off the shelf, with whatever sound card they use, Realtek I think. I have two JBL 308 MkII speakers that are also set to 3/4 volume. I can tell you the sound from Finale is loud. The earphones are way too loud (from the computer's jack) so I have the turn the system sound down to about half or a bit less.

I only offer this to let you know normal sound is possible in Finale. I hope it helps you from looking for a solution in the wrong places. I would start with your computer.

Ernest, thank you for your suggestion.

I am, and have used, a Macbook Pro. The issue I'm having is not enough volume from the computer and the powered speakers I use. It's that Finale is so much quieter than everything else on my computer. When I'm in Finale, and I get a text or email, esp with headphones on, the alerts are so loud that it hurts my ears. I would never have the volume up that high for anything else. I know I could always close my email and text apps, but sometimes I need them on.

My issue, in a nutshell, is that I wish Finale's volume was similar to everything else I use; including the level of mp3s it exports, that I send to other people. When played thru iTunes, they are substantially quieter than the rest of my music.

I am afraid I don't have an answer for you. But I don't know much about computers. Since Finale's sound seem OK on my machine, I don't see why it would not on yours. Perhaps someone else will. Have you asked MM support? They have always responded to my questions.

I originally sent it to MM support and they suggested I go to this post because they review these suggestions, too.

It's not a huge issue for me, just one of those things that if they are going to upgrade some features, maybe they would look at it.

This has been an issue for years and years, so I assume MM has no intention of doing anything about it

William, you're right about it being a long-time issue. Maybe if enough people post, they will look at it.

Apparently it isn't a problem across the board? Some users don't seem to have the problem.

The low levels in Finale have been very annoying to me also and I’ve worked with all the suggestions mentioned above. Right now, I’m working on a project where I need to create backing tracks and export them as WAV files. I can’t get these WAV files anywhere close to the desired volume. Do I really have to load every file into a DAW to boost its level? I hate to have my time wasted like this. Come on, Make Music! I’ll buy the next update. Just give us the improvements we need and are asking for, please.

Same sound level problem for a long time. Currently on Finale 27.  Windows PC connected to an external amp and speakers.  Have to remember to raise or lower the volume on the amp when changing sources. Volume levels in Finale are at max.

I had had started entered a support request then found this solution.  It's for Windows but the VST steps should work on any platform. That was mentioned in an earlier post.

https://makemusic.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/218024897?input_string=low+playback+volume

The default level on my PC was 70.  I raised it to the max and it's about equal with everything else.  Midi/Audio > VST Bank and Effects >  increase the volume on the Aria Player.

As with many other issues with Finale, this too has a third party answer.  Audacity, it is free and very good. Export wav, open in Audacity and set volume anywhere you like even normalize it. Save as mp3.
