Hello,

When I export my music to PDF, the resulting file displays the score in Portrait but the page orientation is Landscape (meaning the score's right margin is very wide and the bottom 2 inches is cut off. The example shown below is Finale's own created demo file.)

Under Page Layout, Page Size clearly says Letter 8.5 x 11 and the Portrait button is selected. The score was created to the default Letter 8.5 x 11 size via the Launch Window.

I see this issue is fixed on MAC OS, but I see no fix for Windows 10 version of Finale v27.2.

Ironically, setting the Page Size to Landscape 11 x 8.5 displays the music in Portrait with margin issues to the left (see below).

My work around is to Print (instead of Export) and select "Microsoft Print to PDF" as my printer. That works properly as does actually selecting my printer.

Any ideas? Thanks!

Legal is 8-1/2 x 14. If you have letter in one spot, and legal in the other, that could explain it. You might also try exporting a PDF through the Graphics tool, or a 3rd party app like CutePDF.

I mistakenly typed "Legal" instead of "Letter" in the previous post (now corrected).

The page/file is default is Letter 8.5 x 11 Portrait, yet the pdf is printing on Letter size Landscape, thus creating the margin error, despite the correct Page Layout and Size settings as far as I can tell. Graphics tool export also displays the same margin/orientation issue as pdf export. I do have a 3rd party pdf printer spooler (Microsoft to PDF) that does convert the file correctly. I see there's a similar issue in MAC OS, I was wondering if anybody using was having the same issue on Windows.

It's differently something with Finale's pdf convert process. Using the Graphics Tool, I'm able to export the score as a number graphic files, all displaying perfectly.

As I recall, one must set the page size in two places. One place is in the Document Menu; the other is in the Print Menu so that the Finale format and your Printer format agree. As far as I know this would apply to PDF printing as well as paper printing.

I am using Windows 10 and 27.2. I don't see your issue so it will work correctly.

IMHO, Finale's print box is a nightmare. It is either difficult to use or doesn't work at all. But you do need to make sure you have all parameters set the same in Page Layout and the Print Box. If you use something like Cute PDF you need to make sure it is set the same, too.

Unlike the Mac, Windows does not include a default pdf tool. Win 10 did include a Microsoft app for awhile but that was discontinued in later builds and is not included in Win 11.

Cute PDF gets good reviews from Finale for Windows users.

Thanks for all your help, everybody!

Damn if I don't why this is happening. Letter 8.5x11 Portrait is the setting under:

  • Page Layout>Page Size
  • Document Options>Page Format
  • File>Print Page Setup

but "Export to PDF" still prints portrait score on Landscape orientation, as does "Export to Pages" (PDF) under Graphics Tool. I even uninstalled my Adobe Acrobat/Reader in case there was a conflict.

But using File>Print:

  • selecting either of my 2 printers
  • choosing Microsoft to PDF
  • choosing CutePDF spooler (thanks for the tip)
  • "Exporting To Page" to any graphic file (JPEG, PNG, TIFF)  under Graphics Tool

saves/prints/displays the score perfectly. I just updated to V27.2 last week and it seems to me each new version fixes some things, but other things stop working (I don't even want to get into how the software doesn't work with my Focusrite audio interface at all anymore.)

I'll be glad to hear what more can be done, but I can use these workarounds.

Leo would you care to send me the file. I could see if I can tell if there is something in it or anything from keeping it printing correctly and easily. It should! No matter which version of Windows or Finale mine has always printed correctly to pdf.

How to create a new size like 10X13 in Printer Page Setup?

  • choosing Microsoft to PDF

Again, Microsoft Print to PDF has been depreciated and is no longer offered. It causes problems and MS decided that fixing it wasn’t worth the effort.

How to create a new size like 10X13 in Printer Page Setup?

It depends. What version of Finale? What is your OS—Mac or Windows and what build? Does your printer support this size as an option or must you create a Custom size. This is important and we won’t know till you tell us.

  1. First create the (custom) 10x13" page size under the Document menu.
  2. Then apply that page size to your pages via the Layout Tool menu option Redefine Pages.
  3. Then you are ready to print/export the file to PDF.

(Thanks to Finale Music's David Cusick for reminding me how to do this.)
