I am using 2014.5 on a PC with Windows 11.  Finale is installed on my C: drive, but I save all my work to my D: drive. I use finale for songwriting so my work tends to be iterative over time.

I have had several instances now where Finale has lost my file. After having a file open for a few days and each time I work on it, I save my changes. Sometimes closing one file then opening another, everything is working as expected. Then out of the blue, I go to save the file and I get "Finale cannot find the file specified".  I open the directory and its not there. I have saved it there 20 x's by now. Or sometimes this happens when I open finale and try to find a file I worked on recently I get the same message.  Finale has created a backup folder on my D: drive I can find my latest version there, but I very troubled by why it would "Lose" the one in my working directory.  Any ideas?

Thanks, Frank.

I believe that this is the root of your problem:

Finale is installed on my C: drive, but I save all my work to my D: drive.

It is not unusual for external drives to go to sleep or otherwise not be available when you need. The solution can be simple as shutting down and burnish the cable ends. It can also be a problem with the drive itself or a half dozen other possibilities. Not nearly enough information to diagnose further.
