I opened the file on my Surface 3, running Finale 26 and the file says, that it was created using Finale 2001d.r1 for Windows.

It is hard to say. If I open any of those files in Finale 2014.5 it works. The only way to find out is to go through the same procedure with Finale 26, which could lead to the same crash I describe...
