7 and -7 are generic errors that tell you something cannot be found. Did you run both installers in the download? Did you reboot when done?

I'm using Note Performer, but when I try to use SoftSynth it just plays the last half note in the phrase. To clarify, it does play correctly in NotePerformer, yes?

If the Mac version of Cubase is able to act as a Slave to Finale, that's not a bad idea. Anyway, that would be my must have feature with any DAW on a Mac.
