What operating system do you use?
You are correct: closely spaced chords (and sometimes lyrics as well, particularly when using larger than default fonts) need manual help to avoid collisions.
I also use the Alignment and Justification options in the Lyrics menu (or right-click context menu) to adjust spacing issues in tight lyric deployment.
