Both of your suggestions helped. I did rename the application "Finale 25" and didn't have "Automatic Update" on. Thanks to you both. Whew! Deadlines...
Yikes! Tried to upgrade to Finale 25.2, it says it loaded successfully, but the Finale panel says I'm still using Finale 25.1.0232, and my problem with pages going blank still happens.
Sorry, just saw you've titled your query "Speedy Entry..." I guess it's later than I think.
Are you using Speedy Note Entry? If so, check to see if you're using "MIDI Device for Input." If so, that'll give you a rest instead of a note when entering from the keyboard.

Used this screen: Even though created Expression icon was correctly appended to staff, the patch change didn't take effect. Any thoughts?
I understand that I could set patches on different channels in the aria player and then just assign a channel change to the expression, but why can't I just change patch as in earlier Finale versions?
