Opening a .musx file

I have Finale Printmusic 2014 and all my files are saved as .musx

But someone has just sent me - I think they use Sibelius - a file which I have saved as .musx

but it won't let me open it saying it is an "Invalid type file".

How can I open it?

.musx is a Finale format. You need the file sent as MusicXML

Although PrintMusic can import MusicXML, it has some restrictions compared to Finale. I don't know if any will affect you—it will depend on the score.

How exactly did you "save the file as .musx"? What format was it in when you received it?
