I'm trying to put rhythmic notation in layer one on my drum part but also want to have the rhythm of the horn players on the top line as well. Is there a way to do that?
Without knowing your OS and version of Finale, it's hard to give a precise answer. That said, JW Staff Polyphony is the tool that you probably want. Here is is from the Mac manual for Finale 27:
