When I notate a fermata it seems that the ritard continues as though there IS no femata, making the fermata last an inordinate amount of time. (The next measure after the fermata assumes "a tempo.")

 

What are the actual "steps" to achieving the desired length of the fermata and still allowing the ritard prior to, plus, of course the next measure return to "a tempo?"

First, where are you putting the rit? I’ve found that it needs a few measures to take hold, so to speak. I believe that you can edit the fermata duration for length of time. Take a look at the articulation definition. For getting back to the original tempo, I would use an a tempo expression. You can hide it if you don’t want it to appear.

The rit. automatically occurs after inserting the fermata.   I didn't have to put it anywhere.  Below is a copy of the "art. designer."  I tried, to no avail, changing the top note value from 0 to 50 resulting in NO change upon playback.  What do I need to do?
