Finale 2014 in Windows 10.

I have a hymn with the standard layout: lyrics between two staves of parts. Sometimes the stems of notes in the alto part or the tenor part extend into the lyrics and I want to shorten them. I use the "special tools" palette and select "stem length." It lets you adjust the stem length, yes, but it also moves the stem left and right if you're not absolutely steady with your mouse hand. I can't actually think of a situation where I would want to detach the stem from the note head. Maybe some contemporary composers do that, and that's fine, but shouldn't the default be to allow only vertical adjustments? Is there a way to restrict this? I know some graphics programs will let you shift-drag or control-drag to lengthen a line in only one direction.

On a Mac, holding the Shift key while dragging constrains the line to vertical. Does that not work on Windows?

Well, I had tried that and it didn't work but now I've tried it again and yes, it does. You have to hit stuff just right, apparently, but yes that fixed it.

Thanks.
