I used the expression tool and assigned the tempo to quarter note = 128. 

The file plays through VST, but half way into the song, the tempo becomes very slow.

Is there a way to erase the tempos in the entire song and start over?

Select All > right click > clear selected items > click on None > ciick on MIDI date (all should be selected)  > OK

that should do it
