Hello!

What are your recommendations for a music scanning/recognition (OCR) software that is compatible with Finale25? The main objective is to take sheet music and/or a digital form thereof (pdf, tiff, etc.) and have it converted into a .musx, XML, or similar file format. I understand that Finale used to have this feature back in 2016 but then discontinued it shortly after.

Below are some software options I found online and was curious to get people's thoughts about them, and how they compared regarding a scanning feature?

1) Musitek's Music-to-XML software:

1. Music to XML: worthless, because you can’t edit the recognition errors. This applies to any app that “takes a picture and turns it into music!”

2. Scan Score: I haven’t tried it, but another poster didn’t like it. He wound up buying #3


3. SmartScore 64 Pro: The only choice, IMNSHO. I have worked hundreds of scores with this and its predecessor.

4. No experience.

Hey Mike R, 

Thanks so much for your help and your expertise. Even after comparing the prices between Music to XML and SmartScore64 Pro, they're only $100 difference in price ($99 vs $199), so I think you just saved me a headache with not purchasing Music to XML and then later being disappointed. 

Out of curiosity, do you know why the other poster did not like ScanScore?

I don't remember. I think he wasn't happy with the results. Maybe he'll see this thread and chime in!
