Hello everyone.

I am wondering whether it is possible for me to have a recording (of a classical piece I wrote and played on the piano) transcribed into sheet music by picking up the sound via a microphone which is connected to Finale.

I use Finale on a computer which is running Windows 10. I am not sure of the software version but will try to find out which one my mother's computer is running on.

I look forward to your responses.

At one time Finale tried something like this (but one would have to play in one voice at a time); but the experiment was apparently deemed less than successful, since the developers dropped it several versions ago.

Simple answer: no.

That would be like eating a cake, and printing out the recipe. If you can't notate it, you will have to find a transcriber to do the job. Sorry.

There are apps that claim to be able to convert audio to MIDI. These work best with simple pieces.

OTOH, nearly all DAWs convert your piano to accurate MIDI if you play it in. You can then edit the resulting piano roll and quantize so that the desired rhythms are achieved. Export the resulting MIDI file and import into Finale. The more care you took in editing the MIDI, the better your results in Finale.

If you are really, really accurate, you can do Real Time Entry to play a MIDI piano directly into Finale. Accuracy counts. Again, piece of cake if entering single lines. With a complex piano part, most players go the DAW/Edit route first to save time.

J Adrian Verkouteren: I see. Thank you for telling me.

Mike Rosen: Thank you for weighing in. I am not surprised. I have considered hiring a transcriber and I may end up doing this.

Mike Halloran: I have actually done this kind of thing before. However, I've developed wrist troubles since then and so I try to avoid playing this particular piece (which is complex and fast at times, and causes my wrists quite a bit of discomfort). Thank you for suggesting this though. The friend's system that I used in the past was pretty impressive. It wrote out every line I was playing on the piano. We unfortunately set the wrong time signature, which threw everything off, but had I had the music theory knowledge that I have now, and had I been mentored by my uncle who has a pretty solid academic background in music, I think it could have turned out well.

Thank you to all three of you for weighing in. I hope that you all will have a good day.
