I understand how to use Utilities/Music Spacing/Apply Note spacing, but it there any way to enter the notes with Simple or Speedy

and have them space correctly without using Utilities? Each new measure that I enter notes is difficult to read due to poor spacing. Could this be a Fit Measures issue?

Program Options > Edit > Automatic Settings > Automatic Music Spacing (checked)

 

You might also consider doing your note entry in scroll view, if you aren't already doing so. Save the spacing issues in page view for later.

And don't bother with the fit measure command until all of the music has been entered and you have an idea about how the layout is going to work.
