To remove a note, chord or rest, position the insertion bar on it and press DELETE. To remove a single note from a chord, position both the insertion bar and the pitch crossbar) on the notehead and press BACKSPACE.

The delete key on the keyboard doesn't delete an entry? Also, the backspace should turn it into a rest or delete a selected note in a chord. (Windows, I suspect Mac is similar)

Are you saying what we offered does not work even though we are on  Windows and  you're using a Mac? Why would there be a "shortcut" for a single key operation?

The forum has a Mac expert possibly he will see this thread and offer a true Mac solution.

so use the Backspace key, it does want you asked for ("delete a note")

I am not sure whether you are talking “Finale-speak”.

In “Finale-speak” you can Delete a Note, or Delete an Entry.

When you Delete a Note, you replace the note with a rest of the same duration (so that the following entries are not shifted).

When you Delete an Entry, it is completely removed, so that the measure is no longer filled, and the following entries are shifted to the left.

To see the keyboard shortcuts for {Delete Note} and {Delete Entry}, look in the sub-menu:

Speedy menu > Speedy Edit Commands > Delete Note (and the shortcut is displayed here)

It is exactly because I know Finale that I am asking for a feature apparently not so well known...

In Mac laptop (my case), Speedy entry,  if you try to delete a note (a note not an entry...) you have no keyboard shortcut to click...

to delete an entry you press backspace ok BUT to delete a note...?

yes, but that key (Delete) doesn't exist on the keyboard of a Mac laptop...

Actually that key is called the Clear key.

Unfortunately a laptop (usually) does not have a NumPad - and the Clear key is located on the NumPad.

Then the question is:

Does your laptop have the option of using a region of the QWERTY keyboard as a NumPad.

Some laptops have a such option.

If your laptop does not have that option, then your options are

either

- an external NumPad (which is the solution, I would use)

or

- a third party utility that can give you a shortcut for Clear. (Keyboard Maestro comes to mind)

or...

I discovered by chance that fn+Shift+Backspace can substitute the Clear key (Mac Laptop) and Delete a note

whereas fn+Enter actually Add a note

both in Speedy Entry

This is similar to an issue that vexed me for a long time, particularly with using the Enter key to enter a note in place of a rest. Yes there is a convoluted keystroke to do it on my MacBook Pro, but if I'm holding down notes on a MIDI keyboard with one hand, I can't do the keystroke sequence because the fn key on a MBP is only on the left side and the Return key is on the right. No one has hands wide enough to handle that. So I ended up getting a cheap USB numeric keypad since it has an Enter key. That solved the problem. But given how common Mac laptops are (I'm still using my 2018 MBP and it's working nicely to this day), you'd think MM would have made such keystroke sequences more functional.
