You can get rid of the left barline of systems in Document Options -> Barlines -> Left Barlines : uncheck "Display on Multiple Staves". This applies to the whole score.

A last remark : for fine positioning, Finale has guides and a grid. The "snap to grid' function could help.

S should work in the Selection Tool. If it doesn't, create the metatool (Shift-S and select the style "Slash Notation" in the list). To apply, select the region, hold S and click.
