Hello!  Hoping someone can help me figure this issue out.  I have Finale 2012 (I know it's not the latest version but it's the version I learned in college and most familiar with, from a composing perspective not too much in the technical sense.  I'm running it on an OSX 10.8 MacPro.  When I plug in my midi device (Casio PX-160) Finale recognizes it instantly and allows me to choose it in the drop down menu as my midi device normally.  After selecting my Casio midi device, when I go to use it to enter note data (whether by speedy entry, hyper-scribe etc)  there's nothing happening. Tried re-booting the system, tried plugging the usb midi cable into a different port but nothing changes -Finale recognizes it and allows me to select it, but nothing translates after that.  Under options in any of the above mentioned methods to choose entry -midi entry is enabled.   My midi device works great in StudioOne3, as well as Notion for composing without any communicating problems, so I feel like I'm just missing some elusive setting -hopefully. Already went thru youtube tutorials with no avail.  Otherwise Finale still functions well (even for being the 2012 version:)  and I'm still pleased with it using standard entry, just need to speed up the workflow process.  Any help would be awesome…thanks!

Have you checked the checkboxes "Allow MIDI input" in Simple or Speedy Entry? That's my first thought.

Hey thanks for the reply!  Yeah I have those checked as well…you mean under speedy or simple entry options right?

Hello Gamallel,
I am just wondering if you ever solved this problem. I am having a similar problem in Finale 2014 with a Casio CGP-700. I am also using a legacy system and cannot get support from MakeMusic. I see the CASIO icon in Audio Midi Setup, but input in Speedy does not work. I would appreciate hearing about your experience and if you solved it. Thanks

How does your Casio send MIDI to the computer? MIDI cables, USB, or both?

Do you use the keyboard to enter data or control any other programs on your computer? Does the keyboard work with them?

Thanks so much for your quick response.
The Casio uses USB. I have been running Logic 9 and Finale 2014 on a Mac with OS 10.9.5, and I was using a 4-octave Nektar Impack iX49, which is also USB, for MIDI input to both applications. The Nektar was supposed to be a temporary keyboard controller while we were doing a home renovation that started 4 years ago and got terribly stalled. After finding a new builder and finally getting my studio space re-opened I find myself in old software and legacy system limbo. Anyhow, to get to the point, I just purchased the Casio CGP-700, which is a fully weighted 88-key keyboard that has USB MIDI, and I am able to see the CASIO USB-MIDI icon in Audio MIDI Setup. When I run Logic 9 I get a dialog that is looking for the old iX49 controller, but in spite of that it allows me to send MIDI data, and I can record live, even though it doesn't seem to "see" the CASIO. Unfortunately, in Finale 2014, the MIDI/Internal Speaker Setup window sees the CASIO icon, but when I choose it as the input device it does not receive note information. In Finale I principally use the Speedy tool for note input, so this is a terrible problem. When I try to enter a note from the keyboard I only get rests of the appropriate number. I can revert to the other keyboard, but that's a real pain. I made a tech support request to casio.com and got a reply that "The CGP-700 is USB compliant so there is no driver is needed. When you connect the keyboard to the computer it is set to MIDI by default." When I tried to contact MakeMusic I got a reply that they no longer provide support for legacy software. I actually own Finale v.2016, but I have been unable to run it on OS 10.9.5, and I can't run Logic 9 on any newer system, so I find myself in a bad spot. (I prefer to stay with Logic 9 because the interface to v. 10 is so radically different I would have to re-learn most everything.)
Any suggestions would be most welcome.
Thanks,
Curtis Bryant

I am running out of ideas. Try checking that your Casio is broadcasting MIDI to Finale on All Channels, or at least that Finale is set up to receive on the same channel the Casio is using to send. In recent versions of Finale, this is part of the MIDI/Audio menu.

Open Audio Midi Setup.app in your Utilities folder. Click on the MIDI tab. If it is visible but greyed out but your keyboard is on and connected, delete the profile. It should refresh the screen with an active profile. If it's not there and active, Finale will not be able to use it. This was an issue for some from Mavericks to Sierra.
