Can anyone recommend a DAW that's both low cost and does not have a steep learning curve. I'm a classical composer who's been invited to write a live-performance score for 8 musicians and conductor for a silent-film festival. I've never written for film and have only about 6 weeks until the score is due so I need the simplest system possible. I use MacOS Sierra, version 10.12 and the latest version of Finale.

Perhaps because there are no DAWs with both  both low cost and without a steep learning curve.

Just about any DAW requires a learning curve.

Well, if on a Mac, Logic is low cost @ $199. It has a lower learning curve than many being only steep. I can’t stand it and use Digital Performer instead.

I find the cheapware pretty useless. Reaper is ridiculously complicated. The ‘lite’ version of pretty much anything is cheap and useless in Rewire. The freewarre is even worse.

So Mike, are you saying that MOTU DP is the best DAW for Finale users to pick? I've been trying to choose between Cubase Artist or DP and have had trouble finding the answer for which works easier with Finale.

Hi Beau,

I am not saying that. The issue is Rewire, not Finale, in this case. Rewire is the interface and many DAWs work with it. If you don't like Finale with Rewire, then the DAW won't much matter.

As for me, I have active licenses for Logic and Digital Performer. Each handles VIs differently. I prefer the way that DP works and their tech support. I am not you, however.

I would come up with a simple project in Finale that you can test with Rewire and as many DAWs as you can deal with during a 30-day evaluation period.

If you have a 3rd party VI library, so much the better since you will be able to use it in Finale as well as most DAWs. Otherwise, you are stuck using any included libraries and that will make testing more difficult. Some VI libraries are also available for an eval period. If you need recommendations, let us know what kind of music you do.
