Hello Rick,

Have you been able to reset preferences?  

To try this please do this:

1. Exit Finale.
2. Hold down your Windows key and press the letter R to open the Run dialog box.
3. Type "%appdata%" (without quotation marks) and click OK.
4. Navigate to MakeMusic\Finale -.
5. Find and delete these two files:

-.ini
FINMIDI.ini

6. Empty your Recycle Bin.
7. Restart your computer.
8. Relaunch Finale.

I did try that after a search for 'crashing Finale 2014.5' where I found that suggestion. I think that was posted by you... at least the name was Kevin.  The source was the Finale forum - which is now closed.  Since doing that, I've not been back to enter music on Finale to test it.

One thing to note to the above, the source I found said to 'navigate to Finale 2014' and then delete the 2 ini files, etc. That is what I tried.  Here's a link to the source I found:

After empty recycle bin and a reboot, I relaunch Finale 2014.5 and it's like the first time I ran it asking if I want to share info with MakeMusic.  Of course I answered 'yes'.  The next screen shows some choices for Midi in / out.  I don't use midi in, so no choice... but for Midi out is shows:

SmartMusic SoftSynth 1

Not sure what to select so left it at that.

Well, that didn't fix it at all. I'm wishing now I never upgraded from Finale 2001.  It's more powerful I know, but at least 2001 never crashed.

Also, now it crashes when I try to play something.  I get a report there's now sounds loaded.  Sheesh!  This is frustrating!

That certainly does sound frustrating! Since the issue seems oddly persistent I am going to open up a support ticket with you so we can gather some more information and get to the bottom of this.

I wonder what happened to support?  I uninstalled, reinstalled like Lawson instructed, replied 3 or 4 days ago that I am still having the same or similar problems  Also, no sounds heard at all.

I am glad that you posted here since it looks like we have not received your last response. Could you try resending your latest response to our ticket? We can certainly continue addressing the issue!

I just resent email with the ticket no. in the subj.  Note... It's from a different email client as Yahoo has really gone down the tubes.

I replied three times to the 'zendesk' with the appropriate ticket number in the subj. line. Attached were images of the requested log, and the change setup.

Just a note to anyone who might be following this...

Thanks to the folks at the Zendesk at Make Music, my 2014.5 seems to be running normally again. Uninstall / reinstall seemed to fix the crashing, and disabling a rarely used driver ('Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device'), fixed the sound so playback works again.  I'm not sure, but suspect that when I installed a USB Fax-modem a few months ago, Windows-10 went out searching for a driver and found this one. If so, it's strange that my fax still works.
