Mac OS 10.12.3; Finale 25.2.0.79

My opera full score needs text insertions to denote different characters singing the various parts, but the positions of the text (I am using 'T') remain independent when a file is reopened and the bar lengths are computed differently by the programme. The result is that the text insertions are often a couple of bars out of sync with the music. This is problematic when I want to print the score. What to do?

I use expressions, rather than text, for Character names in vocal scores, and I recommend that highly since you can attach the expressions to individual notes or rests to position them.

Nevertheless, you can do better with text. I am guessing you enter the text in Page View. In Page View text devolves into page-attached rather than measure attached. You can change this via Frame Attributes to attach the text to a specific measure of a specific staff. Still, the positioning is calculated from the start of the measure, which is less precise as measure lengths change. Text attached in Scroll View will be measure/staff attached, but--again--when you switch back to Page View and measure lengths change, the positioning relative to the start of the measure will not be precise.

The changing measure widths could be caused by an automatic document setting:

Document menu > Document Options > Multimeasure Rests > Update Automatically

The feature “Update Automatically” is useful during the initial phase when you enter music from Scroll View.

“Update Automatically” will break multimeasure rests and adjust measure widths as you from Scroll View enter music into empty measures.

On The Other Hand, you should de-select “Update Automatically” during the final phase when you have finished entering music, and are working on the layout - to avoid that Finale destroys your layout work with carefully adjusted measure widths.
