Hello!  I am in the process of transcribing some Renaissance pieces into modern notation.  There have been a few questions that have come up along the way.  FYI - I'm using Finale 25 for Mac.

1. Creating an "Incipit" intro measure.  Through Google searches, I have been able to figure this one out, but I'm having a few problems.  #1., Is there a way to change that measure so it's not included in the total measure count?  Right now it's listing my first measure of music after the Incipit as measure 2.  #2, I'm having troubles adding different clefs to that measure without it affecting my whole document.  Any help here?

2. Renaissance notation - I want to include the original Renaissance clefs and notation in this Incipit measure, but I simply cannot figure out how to do it.  I've tried downloading different fonts, but can get them to show up, I've copy / pasted notes from sample documents, but that doesn't seem to work either.  Is there a straight forward way someone can tell me to add in Renaissance clefs and notation into this incipit measure?

Any help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated!  Thank you!!

If anyone has answers to these questions, please feel free to email me if that would help - napayant@gmail.com

1. The general solution for an “Incipit” is a measure in a separate system.

If you - in the Page Layout menu - de-select “Avoid margin Collisions”, then you can position two systems next to each other.

To avoid that this first measure is included in the measure numbering, there are two solutions:

- edit the measure number region so that the first measure included in the region is Measure 2 (but let the Starting Number be 1)

or

- in the Measure Attributes for Measure 1, de-select the option “Include in Measure Numbering”.

2. You can use the Clef Tool to enter clef changes in Measure 2.

Since Measure 1 is in a system of its own, it will display courtesy clefs at the end of the system.

Hence:

In the Measure Attributes for Measure 1, select “Hide Courtesy Clefs, Key and Time Signatures”.

3. To make the Renaissance clefs display, the Renaissance clefs must be defined/created in the document.

Go to

Document menu > Document Options > Clefs > Clef Designer…

You can have 18 different clefs in a Finale document.

18 is probably much more than you will ever need.

NB:

A clef can display a font character, but it can also display a shape, created in the Shape Designer.

4. Finale comes with a ready made example.

Have you studied that example?

File menu > Open Worksheets & Repertoire > Repertoire > Classical > Instrumental > des Pres Vive le Roy

Thank you very much!  With your suggestions and just a bit more messing around, I was able to get everything to look the way I wanted it to.  Now if I can only remember all of the steps I took for future projects!!
