Scoring a string section.  I want to work in Treble Cleff while scoring the viola part in concert pitch.  And have the clef sign change automatically to Viola clef when I am not in concert pitch.  In the past I accomplished that by setting the staff to "no transposition" and setting transposition clef to "Viola clef"

I am working with MAC X.11.6; and I have an updated version of Finale 25.2.0.79

I have searched the knowledge base and it says I am doing the right adjustment, and yet it is not working in my score.  I have experimented with several settings, but I always end up with the same clef in concert and transposed mode.

Help?

Welcome to the forum!

And what about the staff’s so called “First Clef”?

Did you set the staff’s First Clef to Treble Clef, or to Viola Clef?

I could be wrong here, but I think that “Display in Concert Pitch” uses the First Clef.

Peter, thanks.

If I remember correctly, that is exactly the way it used to work…and part of my frustration that it doesn't seem to work that way any longer.  With the addition of the Score Manager screen <command+K> several things changed, and perhaps this is another of them. So I'm still looking for an answer.

I do appreciate your willingness to weigh in.

David Hastings,

One of the new features in Finale v25 has been requested by many users for many years:

Document menu > Keep Octave Transposition in Concert Pitch

What this means, is that you can now enable “Display in Concert Pitch” - and the octave transposing instruments (like e. g. Piccolo Flute) will now (still) display Written Pitch (= without a gazillion ledger lines) - even if “Display in Concert Pitch” is selected.

Unfortunately this new feature “Keep Octave Transposition in Concert Pitch” also affects the clef display for Viola - even if Viola is not an octave transposing instrument.

I suggest that you de-select “Keep Octave Transposition in Concert Pitch”.

Peter,

Thank you very much… that was the one switch I hadn't found yet.  It works perfectly now. I appreciate your taking the time to respond.
