Is there a way to import Encore files into finale?
Yes. Here are a few ways that work with varying degrees of success.
Export your Encore file as MIDI or MusicXML. You will now use the Import command to bring the MIDI or .xml file into Finale. How to access this depends on the version of Finale you have.
Normally, MusicXML gives much better results since Finale will have to guess how to translate the MIDI data into notes. In fact, I still use Encore instead of Finale for MIDI import, then export the result as .xml.
Although the current version of Finale supports MusicXML 3.0, Encore does not—5.0.4 for Win supports v1.1 and 5.0.7 for Mac supports v1.3, I am told. This means that notes will import as will some elements such as clefs and a few expressions. Lyrics and most expressions will not import, however. You will have to edit and correct the results but this saves time.
If you have a large number of scores, the best way is to print Encore to .pdf, scan to MusicXML and import with a tool such as SmartScore X2 Pro. This is the only way I know to capture lyrics. https://store.makemusic.com/Store/
There's an app from the same company that contains some of the functionality but won't let you edit—it's also half the price. You'll find the links at the bottom of this page. http://www.sibeliusblog.com/news/musitek-introduces-smartscore-music-to-xml-a-pdf-music-scanning-converter/
If you have Finale 2014.5 or earlier bundled with SmartScore Lite, don't bother with it—MusicXML is faster, more accurate and relatively headache free by comparison. Unlike the paid apps, SS Lite can't import lyrics or most expressions.
I have Encore 5.0.7, SmartScore X2 Pro and a few versions of Finale.
Sure. If your Encore file uses the octave G clef for tenor voices, your .xml import into Finale will be in the wrong octave. Don't transpose—instead, correct the clef and the notes will display and play back correctly.
I still use Encore for quick entry in a lead sheet or praise band charts. I can edit as I arrange instead of opening up editing tools afterward as in Finale. I generally export/import to Finale before adding lyrics.
