It sounds like one of two things could be happening.

First, if the issue only occurs when you have one or more document(s) minimized, while working on another score. Try un-minimizing any minimized documents, and then choosing View > Redraw Screen. If this bring back the missing items, then you are most likely running into a known issue with Finale 2014.5; check out this knowledge base article for more information: Page items display incorrectly, changes don't take effect, cannot select items (Finale 2014.5 for Mac).

If this scenario does not fit the issue, and items just do not show up no matter what documents you have open, then the issue is most likely a fonts problem. Please use this knowledge base article to address this: Music fonts display incorrectly
