Windows 10 / Finale v25

I've finished a complete score, filled out the ScoreManager->File Info information, and placed Title/Composer on the first page of the full score.

When I extract/merge to create a part score, the ScoreManager->File_Info information does carry over to the merged score. However all the text that was placed on the first page of the full score does NOT show up in the merged score. I have to place into the merged score again.  I'm thinking I must be doing something wrong here.

Any ideas why this may not be working as intended?

Thanks ... Mike

I am not sure what you mean by your words “extract/merge to create a part score”.

Both “extract” and “merge” are words that have a very specific meaning in “Finale-speak”.

What is the problem you are trying to solve?

- print a part?

- create a part as a separate Finale document?

- or?

Hi Peter,

I'm a novice here, so please forgive my misuse of the product. I'm self-taught :)

I created a full score that contains multiple voices and multiple instruments. On the first page of my full score I've done the Text-Inserts to provide specifics (i.e. Title,Composer,Version Date).

Now I'm ready to create part scores from the full score.  From my full score I do File->Extract Parts, which blows out files for all the individual staffs of the full scores.  Then I use the ScoreMerger and select multiple files to create part scores (I'm purposefully combining more than 1 staff in a part score). In the ScoreMerger, I've selected the radio button "Merge these parts into one score" and then I hit the Merge button.

Finale does its job and combines the selected parts and presents the merged parts as a score to me. However, what does not get brought into the merged score are the Text-Inserts that I did in the full score. I can see the ScoreManager->File_Info information is brought from the full score in the merged part score, but the Text-Inserts get dropped. I end up having to manually go through the Text-Inserts process on each merged score. I'm thinking I'm not doing something properly on the full score that the Text-Inserts don't automatically show up in the merged score.

Thanks for your help.

In this case I suggest that you try linked parts instead of extracted parts.

You can not avoid linked parts anyway, since extracted parts are created from linked parts.

The basic idea is that the linked parts are included in the (full) score document.

There is only one document, and all the parts are in there.

Correct a wrong note in the full score, and the note is also corrected in the linked part.

Take a look at the dialog box Manage Parts:

Document menu > Manage Parts…

The dialog box Manage Parts can be expanded, to show more options:

Edit Part Definition >>

To inspect and edit an already existing linked part:

Document menu > Edit Part > …

With the dialog box Manage Parts you can also create a multi-staff part, e. g. a part with all the woodwind staves (= a “mini-score”).

If you are new to Finale (or this aspect of it), let me steer you to Linked Parts (as an alternative to extracting) and the Manage Parts option, both accessible via the Documents menu.

Managing/creating new parts gives you great flexibility. It lets me combine my Rehearsal Piano part with vocal parts to create a Piano/Vocal score, which I can then format and print as a Linked Part.

Here is a list of articles on how to use them.

OK, this is really cool !!

Follow up question.  I have a melody "part" that has Lyrics.

Generally I want to include the melody "part" in multiple combined "New Parts"

In one of the "New Parts" I want Lyrics displayed, but in all other "New Parts" I don't want the Lyrics displayed.

It appears that when I select "Staff" and edit Staff Attributes, it applies to all "New Parts" and not just one.

Is there a way to do what I'm trying to do?

Thanks ... Mike

Instead of changing the Staff Attributes, create a custom staff style that de-selects the display of Lyrics.

Apply that custom staff style where you need to hide the Lyrics.

(Staff styles can be different in the score and in the different linked parts)
