After extracting the parts from a score, when I go back to the score the playback no longer works. does anyone know what to do about this? I'm using the latest version of Finale, V 25.5.0.259, on an iMac OS 10.12.6

This is not typical. If it played before, it ought to play afterwards. You can try restarting your computer to see if that helps.

(Why you use extracted parts rather than linked parts puzzles me, but that is up to you.)

I have already tried that. As for extracted parts, how else would you suggest having an 11 piece ensemble play it? I don't know what linked parts means.

… I don't know what linked parts means …

Linked parts is a feature Finale has had since Finale 2007.

The basic idea is that you have one document containing both the score and the parts.

Correct a wrong note in the score, and the note is automatically corrected in the part, too.

I. e. the parts are linked to the score.

To generate and delete linked parts:

Document menu > Manage Parts…

To view (and edit) an existing linked part:

Document menu > Edit Part > …

While viewing a linked part, you can use the Graphics Tool to export the part as a PDF file.

If you extract parts, you can not avoid linked parts - since extracted parts are created from the linked parts.

Thank you. In fact, I have been doing that forever, just didn't know what the term meant. I always use file - extract parts - manage parts. I didn't know it was possible to unlink them...

However if anyone has an idea why the playback on the score doesn't work after extracting the linked parts, I would be grateful to hear from you!

Unlike linked parts, extracted parts are unlinked.

An extracted part is a separate Finale document, with no linking to the score.

When you correct a wrong note, the note will be corrected in the linked part, but not in an extracted part.

Personally I seldom extract parts.

I find it easier to use linked part.

Also, it is nice to have everything in only one Finale document.

I'm having a related issue - I extracted the 1st Bb Cornet and Tuba parts (to create optional Eb Cornet and Electric Bass parts), and now when I export as .wav from the original score, the only part that is heard in the .wav file is the Bass part (the one I extracted second). I tried rebooting but the issue is now worse - at first I could still listen to the score with the playback controls and hear all the parts, but after the reboot I'm now only hearing the single part even during playback. And .wav files still have only a single line.

I tried extracting all the parts to see if that would fix it. I thought maybe if all the parts were selected in the Extract checklist it might fix the issue, but it didn't work.

Richard Baker,

We need more info.

What program are you using? (the “full Finale”? - PrintMusic?)

What version? (v25? 2014? 2012? … &c.)

What is your operating system? - and what version?

Try restarting Finale. I was able to duplicate your problem and restarting the program worked to bring back full playback from the score.

I've never experienced this before since I switched from using extracted parts to linked parts many years ago except in those cases where I had to do extreme adaptation of a part.

Ordinarily I would add the additional instruments to my full "Working" score, copy and paste into them from the part on which they are based into the new transposed part. I would then create a Conductor's Full Score Part which did not include the duplicated transposed parts. Some others would say to hide the duplicated parts in your original full score; that is another option.)

(I suppose you already know that playback from the extracted (or linked) Bass part will only play back the Bass part. To hear t he full score, you need to make your WAV from the full score.)

Peter's reply: Sorry - I should have included the version I'm using: Full Finale, v. 25.4.0.144 on Windows 10 - it's the latest version (I think).

I was able to restore normal functionality by changing the MIDI/Audio settings from "Play Finale through VST," to "Play Finale through MIDI," and then back to VST again. It's working again, for now.

J Adrian's reply: Yes, I was trying to play back the full score, not the extracted parts. (The extracted parts were even closed and the playback would still only play the bass line.) I've created and hidden parts in the score, as you suggested, in the past but I've found that extracting my "optional" parts is faster. Since I'm back up and running for now, I'll definitely go the hidden parts route from now on!!!

I'd still like to know if there's a setting that could fix this - or is this a bug?

Thanks!

I am really reticent to call something a bug just because it doesn't conform to my wishes; but I have to admit that this situation, which is reproducible, does seem to be a bug. If you report it now (via the Features Request forum or even better via the "Submit a request" link at the top of the page) perhaps it is something simple enough that the Developers can tweak it in time for Finale v26.

Thanks for the expert responses - I'll report it as suggested.

Ive had this problem a lot...try "reassign playback sounds" under midi/audio - but note that may change the instrument you have set up in whatever

you are using for playback. Make sure you have saved the document before doing this....this seems to repopulate the sounds.
