This has vexed me for years now. I prefer dotted barlines. But even with setting "Default Style is Previous Measure's Right Barline," new measures default to the usual solid barline. Is there any way to set a different barline as the default? Thanks.

Hi David,

I tripped over this myself once or twice too, but the Document Option that you are pointing out refers only to the barline on the far left of each system, and then it depends on the barline set in the last measure of the previous system. Is that the barline you are looking to alter, or the barlines for all of your measures? If the former, please note the options above it that dictate whether it shows on single staves and/or multiple staves.

If the latter, I would recommend selecting all of your measures or a region of measures using the Measure tool, double-clicking the selected region, and then changing the Barline option in the Measure Attributes dialog box.

Hope this helps!

Essentially I have every barline as a dotted barline, and the last measure is not surprisingly a final barline. What I do now is multiple times (so I don't forget to do it) I select all measures, right-click and select the dotted barline, and then fix the last one to set it as a final barline. Just seems odd that there is no way to set things up from the start such that new measures have the desired barline. Thanks. Guess I wasn't missing a trick there.

Nope! Definitely not missing something in that particular Document Option; however, I can certainly see how it would be useful to have some sort of document option to set all barlines, Measure Attributes can be a bit hidden. You could also do this and then make a template, that way you don't have to change measure attributes each time.

You may want to post your idea on the Finale - Feature Requests community as well!
