Hello All!

I am having an issue with my Finale that just started happening recently. Whenever I double click on a measure with any of the tools (Key Sig, Time Sig) or on any notes with note specific tools (dynamic, articulation, etc) rather than bringing up the dialogue box as it should so that I can choose, it just puts in the first option.

The interesting part is that if I restart Finale it fixes the problem for a while, and then comes back as I work in the score.

I'll attach a short gif recording so you can see what I mean.

It's very annoying.. has anyone else seen this or know of a fix? Thanks in advance!

Hi Zachary,

That sounds like you have a stuck metatool (when you hold down a key on your keyboard and click as a shortcut to add a specific item). This could be a virtually (and I guess literally) stuck key.

Do you happen to have any security software installed? If so, you might want to check out this article: Unable to use keyboard shortcuts with Finale notation programs (Windows).

If you do not have a security software installed, you might want to start by resetting Finale's preferences. Here's some more information on how to do that: Resetting Finale's preferences (using a tool crashes Finale, etc.).

Hope this helps!

I'll look at some of these posts. Thanks!

I've actually changed keyboards (for unrelated reasons) and the problem wasn't fixed, so I doubt it's a stuck physical key. :)

Got a reply back from support as well.

They suggested resetting the preferences and then rebooting my PC and tapping the 'S' key while it reboots to digitally unstick the key.

I've been working in IT for quite a few years and never once have I seen this issue, but if it works!! :)

It also turns out that the security software issue you posted is specific to Webroot (which I have) so I also added an exception for Finale as suggested in the article you linked.

Here's to hoping that the issue is resolved!

Thanks for your help.

No problem, Zachary.

I hope that things are sorted as well. Thanks again for posting, and enjoy Finale!

Turns out none of that helped my issue.

Even after resetting my preferences and doing the reboot thing, I was still having the issue.

It may be too early to say, but I ran it in Administrator mode and was able to use it for about 2 hours straight with no issue.

This might be my fix for the issue, something else is probably interfering with key presses and Finale can't capture it properly when not elevated.

On an unrelated/related note: I learned about some very very useful keyboard shortcuts for the articulation tool today though that I had no idea existed! So, there's good coming out of this either way!
