I am using Finale 2012 on Windows 7.

I am writing a non-tonal music.  As to Clarinet in Bb and Horn in F, I first write the notes as actual sound in "display in concert pitch" check box checked.

Then finished, I un-check "display in concert pitch" so that the key signature (two sharps for Clarinet and one flat for Horn naturally) appear.

Because the tune is non-tonal, I would not like to show the key signature.  Of course I can hide the key signature but then I have to show all sharps on F and C for Clarinet and sharps on F for French Horn.  This is not so easy task and likely to miss one or two notes in the entire score.

Any method to show those sharps and flats even after I un-check "display in concert pitch"?

More recent versions of Finale are designed to support what you want to do, but I suspect any solution in Finale 2012 will be as work-intensive as you imagine. Perhaps Peter or Mike or another contributor has an efficient work-around.

I suppose one could create a separate (non-playing) version of your score, keep it in concert pitch, but apply an appropriate manual transposition to each part (without adding a key signature) before formatting and printing the linked parts.

Since you are using Finale 2012, I suggest that you, in the Staff Attributes for each transposing instrument select Independent Key Signature (look in the pane Independent Elements).

After you have un-checked “Display in Concert Pitch”, switch to the Key Signature Tool.

Double-click the first measure in a transposing instrument (e. g. Horn in F).

Change the key signature to zero sharps/flats (= C major), and choose to, not transpose => Hold Notes to Original Pitches Chromatically

Repeat this operation for each transposing instrument.

NB:

If you after this key signature change copy music between instruments of different transpositions, then the copied music will get transposed.

You will have to transpose the music back afterwards (use the Utilities menu).

Thank you very much, Jadrian and Peter.

I understand that both comments are suggesting essentially to prepare a separate version for transposed score (non-concert pitch score).  In Finale 2012, it would be the best solution.

After some trials, I found that, after un-check "display in concert pitch", if I apply "courtesy accidentals-default" then intended result can be achieved (not perfect, but close).

Sincerely,

Jun
