I'm working on some 2-staff organ music and I use Text Expressions to indicate when notes should be played in the pedals. This creates an unwanted sustain pedal effect on playback. I could disable Human Playback to not get this but then I won't hear other intended articulations. How do I get rid of this sustain effect without turning off HP?

To avoid that Human Playback reads ‘Ped.’ as a sustain pedal effect, create the expression as a Shape Expression instead.

In the Shape Designer there is a Text (sub-)Tool where you can enter the same text as in a Text Expression.

Interesting. Thanks, that works!

So is there not a way to disable the Text Expression sustain pedal effect without turning HP off?

… is there not a way to disable the Text Expression sustain pedal effect without turning HP off? …

Unfortunately the settings for Human Playback are program specific, not document specific.

You may want sustain pedal effect in other Finale documents.

But …

Take a look at

Preferences - Human Playback

What menu item is selected in

MIDI Data - Start/Stop Time

MIDI Data > Start/Stop Time > HP (Ignore Data)

And have you tried, instead choosing

MIDI Data > Start/Stop Time > No HP Effect

?

Thanks for your Help Peter. I seem to have figured it out.

Choosing <No HP Effect> didn't seem to do anything. I was looking and hoping there would a kind of "off switch." There is, but it wasn't where I expected it to be. (I'm not all that familiar with this aspect of Finale anyway .....) So I had to choose the Custom HP Style and uncheck:

Interpret > Pedal markings.

I hope things get more streamlined and consolidated in the next version.

Thanks again!
