You can avoid that Finale “retranscribes” the rhythm by using Stack Selection.

To make a Stack Selection of a single staff in a multi-staff document, first create a new Staff Set of just the staff you need to Stack Select.

Then, while viewing this new Staff Set you can Stack Select the single staff.

The problem however is that this document is a very large orchestral score that has 38 Staves.  I am currently using all the staff sets and I would need to copy one staff of one instrument to another staff of a different instrument at times so Im afraid staff sets would be terribly cumbersome requiring a lot of additional clicks ... making, deleting, and selecting many many different staff sets.   As well, This isnt just a matter of copying and pasting but this happens in many situations when I am using speedy entry.  Many times, when I click out of speedy, what was a quarter note will become 2 eighth notes.  I notice this problem particularly in passages that have x/8 time signatures.   I remember some time ago there was a function that beamed to time signature with some customization options.  I was hoping there was something similar for rests. 

Ideas???

For example... If i copy OR manually enter the second measure of the attached JPG exactly as the first and then delete the last E natural, finale defaults to 2 eighth rests instead of the single quarter note rest I need.  This is very problematic because if I have 14 staves from which I multi-select the last quarter note to delete, I now have 14 staves in which I must manually go into each and convert the eighth note rests to quarter note rests.

@Make Music Tech Support... Can you help please?  Is there a default setting that allows for rest calculations in a similar manner as beam to time signature?

In this particular example you need to turn a quarter note into a quarter rest.

Both the Speedy Entry Tool and the Simple Entry Tool can do that conversion directly => no need to, first clear, and next enter rest.

You will have to do it one staff at a time, but with keyboard shortcuts it is done quickly.

Speedy Entry (position the crosshair on the note):

Speedy menu > Speedy Edit Commands > Delete Note

Simple Entry (select the note):

Simple menu > Simple Edit Commands > Modify Entry > Toggle Note/Rest
