I downloaded the free trial version of Notepad Finale on my MacPro and then clicked on the icon to install "Notepad2012Mac.dmg" and get it will not install.  Took it the MacPro to the Apple Store and they were confused by the screen only gave the option to open software downloaded to the App Store.  Is this software not possible to download to an Apple product?  Is there another version to download that will work?  Can you send me the exact steps to download?  Thank you.

I cannot buy Finale if I cannot be sure it is the product for me first by using the trial download software.  Thank you.

I think the security policy of your Mac OS prevents Finale Notepad from being installed.

Go to System Preferences of your Mac OS, then open Security. There you can choose which App-Downloads schould be allowed and you will be able to allow Mac OS to open/install Finale notepad.

Thank you Thomas and Mike.  Mike, it is Safari Version 10.1. Thomas, I did this and the Security screen gives the options: in the General tab the bottom section gives only 2 options for the heading: "Allow apps downloaded from:  App Store; App Store and identified developers.

There is no option to download an application from the web.

Not sure now to get this option to show up so I can install the download.  It appears the file downloaded by I cannot get it to install because I get an error box that says: ""InstallProduct.mgkg" can't be opened because it is from an unidentified developer. Your security preferences allow installation of only apps from the App Store and identified developers.  Safari downloaded this file today at 7:52 AM from store.makemusic.com".

Not sure what to do now.  Thanks for your help.  Bryan

Safari is not the Mac OS.

Are you logged in as Administrator? There should be three options including "Anywhere". You need to unlock the screen with an Admin password to check it and continue.

If thats not there, then you might not be able to install.

Bryan,

you are on the right way. In System Preferences -> Security unlock the small lock icon in the bottom left corner by clicking on it. Then you will be asked for your admin password.

After unlocking the lock you will be able to choose between three options for opening downloaded files. The third one should be "Anywhere". Select this one and open the Finale Notepad installer package again. It should be installed now.

Thanks Thomas. I followed your instructions and unlocked the lock in Security and the only options for downloading still showing are: App Store; App Store and identified developers. Do not see the "anywhere" option.

Bryan,

could you please click the Apple icon on the upper left of your desktop and then click "About this Mac". Which OS X-Version is displayed in the information window that pops up?

Bryan,

you may try something else: CTRL-click (click while holding down the CTRL-key) the Finale Notepad App, then select "Open" by clicking on it. In the popping up dialogue click again "Open".

This is a simple way to override the Gatekeeper – but it may depend on which OS X-version you're using.

Yes, just tried it again. When I get to the Installation box and put in my password and click on Install, the next screen says: "The Installation failed; The Installer can't locate the data it needs to install the software...."

Previously, I do not know how I got to the screen shown in Method 2: Control+Click of the link you provided (thank you), but I did click on the box next to: "Don't warn me when opening applications on this disk image" and then clicked: "Open" and the installation did not proceed.

Thanks for your persistence - Is the security so tight now since the Sierra version that I cannot install any applications from the web that are not from the App Store?

No. I am also running OS 10.12.4.

Just to test, I downloaded and installed Notepad 2012 on my system just now and it went fine. I had to change my security settings to Allow apps downloaded from Anywhere before it would install. Once I did, it went smoothly.

Interestingly, it showed a serial number but never asked me for it. I was logged into my user account at the time so that makes sense.

if I understand you right, you managed to start the installer. The error message "The Installation failed; The Installer can't locate the data it needs to install the software...." may come from a corrupted installation file. Have you tried a new download of Finale Notepad?

The downloaded dmg-file sohuld look like this:

Double click this icon and you should get this:

Now CTRL-click on the icon above "Install Finale NotePad.app" and choose "Open".

After that you will be asked again, if you really want to open it:

Check "Don't warn me when opening applications on this disk image" and click "Open".

Then the installer should install Finale Notepad.

Got it!!!  Thanks for all your help!  Mike, Thomas and Lawson, you were all great!  When I sent to download the software to start afresh, I found the website different - did they update their site? I ask because I just downloaded the Finale on a trial basis and not Notepad this time and it downloaded fine.  I tried it out and it seems to be a great program.  Thank you!!  Bryan
