OS 10 El Capitan, MacBook Pro (late 2011)

Finale 2014.5, I do not use a MIDI device.

Have had a hard time with playback for the past year. Upgraded to 2014.5 and it improved for a while. Now it is malfunctioning again. I Went through your Playback Troubleshooting link several times. It seems to be document specific, but is happening on many documents.

With Playback either:

1. the sound doesn't work at all

2. fixes on a pitch and holds it forever. Controls freeze. Next time it will refuse to play.

Restarted Finale half a dozen times. Thrown out several files & emptied the trash. Rebooted several times. Then Finale crashed once while trying to reassign playback sounds.

Trying to reassign playback sounds made everything get very wonky. Now the cursor moves way too fast for the playback, then halfway through the piece it starts fixing on a pitch and won't stop playing that one pitch. Controls don't work half the time at that point. And now other documents are doing that too!

Mixer & Audio Units Banks & Effects are never the problem. Reassign Playback Sounds is an absolute disaster. Can't believe that your site suggests that...

Unexplainable playback in Finale

Also tried this. It solved the problem for a nano-second. Then it went back to refusing to play back.

When a cursor and playback are out of sync, it can mean that your sound card is not set to playback at a sample rate of 44100. Some programs set the card (automaticlally?) at 48000. You should check your audio output in Device Setup.

Not nearly enough information. What are you doing and how are you doing it? What else are you using? Don't expect us to somehow divine the problem from your complaint. You need to tell us step by step.

I would also suspect a sample sample rate issue. A number of programs will take control of the Mac’s audio (Dragon Dictate, for example, resets the audio to 48k) while Finale 2014.5 and earlier want 44.1kHz. This issue pretty much went away in Finale 25.
