Dear People of the music engraving realms!

I´m a film composer only composing for live musicians using Finale 25.3.0.276 on Windows 7 64bit.

So the lack of a movie window is kind of a major dealbreaker for me. I am aware, that there is this Rewire thing but I can´t quite get the point, why I should run a DAW for just displaying a movie. Also it kind of perverts the idea of a music engraving program havind said program as slave inside a very over engineered media player. Not to mention the loss of overview.

Is there any way to get a video file to be displayed IN Finale 25? A plugin? Some kind of workaround? Anything? I´m kind of desperate right now...

bestregards,

Flo

Is there a video workaround available?

In 25, it's Rewire. You could try going back to 2014.5 as many have done.

Some are exporting as MusicXML and importing into Notion 6 to see if that movie window gets the job done. There's a 30-day fully functional demo available and it's $80 cross-grade if you own Finale.

As far as this issue is concerned, "Elvis has left the building."

Hello Mike, Hello J Adrian!

Thanks very much for your quick response! I´m not sure I understand this ReWire thing correctly - but as far as I could follow it goes like this: I´m now forced to use f.e. Pro Tools as a very overengineered media player and Finale 25 as some kind of "plug in"?

Isn´t there anything someone could do? I´m pretty desperate by now since I do not own Finale 2014 and the movie window of my 2012 version keeps messing up my timing pretty badly.

In versions of Finale subsequent to 2011, the movie option continued to present sync difficulties, which is one reason Finale may have discontinued it. My (admittedly hazy) recollection of some other posts suggests that Pro Tools may not be the easiest DAW to sync to Finale, but I may be mistaken. You have presumably watched the intro video for Finale 25 Rewire

but you may get more specific help using the "Submit a request" link above.

There are a large number of DAWs compatible with Rewire. Nearly all are less expensive than ProTools. I don't use RW nor do I use my Win 7 machine, preferring a Mac.

i'd still look at Notion if you really prefer a movie window. Notion's MusicXML import is better than most. Hopefully, PreSonus will jump on MucicXML 3.1 when it's released this summer (3.1 is supposed to be included in the next release of Finale 25). I really dislike the workflow preferring to work in Finale and exporting as .xml. PreSonus has a very popular DAW as well.

Thank you very much, Gentlemen!

I put together every bit of info I could get my hands on and to be honest: it looks grim. Rewire seems to only work in one direction - with a DAW as host and Finale as slave. This arrangement makes it next to impossible to work in a reasonable way, let alone thinking of complex orchestral scores...

Most unfortunate but after ten years it seems that the competition offers a much more comfortable workflow.

Really? How so? I've never seen the occasion where I want Finale or any other notation app (or DAW) to tell the video how fast to go. You normally sync the music to the video, not the other way around.

Anyway, there are other DAWs and notation apps that can handle this. Some even let you import MusicXML.

Time to start looking at how to get the job done which means broadening your horizons. The way that you want to do it in Finale 25 won't.

Hello Mike!

True that. I already purchased software by a competitor. Maybe I´m just a little disappointed to ditch my quite hard archieved Finale workflow after more than ten years.

But I have to say, I´m a bit offended by the Rewire thing everybody keeps talking about. Maybe I just don´t get the Point - but how is Rewire a solution for a movie window?

It's probably a good idea to get over that and figure out what real world solution is going to get the job done for you.
