I've searched everywhere for an answer to what seems a really obvious question.

I have a binary piece with pickups and repeats: how do I get Finale to take away the value of the pickup from the repeat and ending measures?

I can't get the "mid-measure repeat" function to work because my pickup is an eighth in a 6/8 bar.  When I try, I get the response "Make sure the mass edit too is selected..." but I don't have a "mass edit tool" (Version 12.1).  I'm very confused and the manual is NO help.

Don Fader,

We need more info (= a better description of the problem):

1) Is the problem a layout problem, or a playback problem?

If you created the pickup in the document’s very first measure via Finale’s feature “Pickup Measure”, then the pickup measure will play back as a full measure - also when repeated.

To get correct playback, instead create the pickup with the Time Signature Tool (real time signature 1/8, and displaying as 6/8).

2) It is not clear (at least to me) what you mean by your words “a binary piece”.

The better we understand, the better we can help.

It might help if you could attach a graphic (perhaps a scanning of the manuscript), that shows the repeat structure.

Peter is correct about getting the opening measure to play back and appear correctly. If this is the kind of thing you want...

...for the repeat measure, you use the same approach, setting the number of beats to reflect the missing pickup but showing the original time signature. The only reason it shows 4/4 in the example above is that the preceding measure is not 4/4. You can see the subsequent mid-song pickup does not show the 4/4 signature because the prior measure is also "displayed" as 4/4..
